Okay. The world was maybe almost over. Topher was more than a little freaked.

So out came the dice and the cape, and after making a quick annoucement, he set up at a toadstool with some character sheets for some pre-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons.

Kid had priorities.

Rinoa felt that now would be a good time to interject herself.

"Squall just kept his best friend from maiming you, for being an insensitive, selfish child," she said. "Despite the fact that he doesn't like you very much, because it wasn't for you that he did it. But you're the one that doesn't have a shattered spine right now, so a little gratitude would go a long way."

"Look at it this way," Karla said, giving Billy an encouraging smile. "You're making it so I don't have to hit him again later as a reminder. Good on you."

"That's why mine didn't go on it!" Kitty said.

Okay, okay okay okay, Kenzi could only address part of that, so: "THANK YOU FOR DUNGEON MASTERING! ... and seriously, you wonder about the toadstools? What? And sometimes people are touchy! That's why! And and ..." Kenzi put her head in her hands. "Anyone?"

"But..."

THIS WAS VERY SAD, BILLY.

"Was it really that bad?"

Topher scowled. "He wouldn't've..."

Topher. Really. He would have.

"Fine." Almost unintelligibly, he mumbled, "'msorry."

Kitty raised her hand a little. "And there are really better times for certain discussions?" she said. "Like not while we're slaying dragons, for instance."

"Do it," Karla urged. "It's for her own good."

"I agree!" Topher chimed in. "There's no need for punching in the middle of an epic freaking quest!"

That wasn't what she meant, Topher.

"No, JONO is the one that you need to apologize to," Squall told him flatly. "Except not now. You need to thank me, and Kenzi, and..." -- he waved a hand at Billy, whose name he couldn't remember -- "for not letting him kill you. Even though you deserved it."

"Or asking personal questions," Kenzi stressed. Half of her wanted to hug Topher for being clueless. The other half wanted to join the mob. "So, yeah, apologize, and let's get back to the gaaame, and from now on you don't get to name stuff. Or nickname people. Nope. I'm gonna ask Peter to make it a rule."

"Yes!" Karla said, tamping down her impatience. Maybe if she explained it right, Topher would actually get it.

"Topher, Jono didn't always look like that. Something HORRIBLE happened to him--something he's still dealing with. It's changed everything about him, his body, his appearance, how he sees himself...everything. And what did you do? You picked on him. Made him so angry and yet feel so small at the same time. And you did it because you didn't care. You were a bully right there. A cruel, heartless bully who used ignorance to hurt someone for no damn reason."

She looked at him and then shook her head. "I hope you feel ashamed of yourself. You should. I'm ashamed of you. Warren and Tony would be, too."

"Well, then," Jono replied, smiling a little because... shut up, he liked this character, "Thorgabella decides that she doesn't like the cursed woman's incessant chatter, and so, after a failed attempt at trying to convince her in half-orcian interpretive dance to stop talking, she shrugs, pirouettes over to her, and knocks her soundly on the head."

Problem: Solved!

"Bl-- JONO stormed out," Topher corrected himself hastily. That was almost a disaster. "He might've been eaten by the cloud by now!"

TOPHER.

"But, um, sorry Billy! And Kenzi!"

Because he liked them.

"No. I killed it."

Kitty in real life was not a violent person.

Squall glared at him, long and hard. And almost killed Topher himself.

And then he snorted and shrugged. "Whatever."

Billy was genuinely glad that Karla mentioned Tony, because at least that might get the information through Topher's head. "You've got to learn to stop the first time people tell you you've said something offensive, because yes, it was bad. And for the record, in general, when someone's eyes go red, it's time to apologize." Even if he didn't mean it, geez.

Karla looked at Kitty. "Why would you do that?"

Those were real tears, Kitty. Real ones.

"Probably fed it to Thorgabella, too," Jono offered, helpfully.

Kenzi held up her hand for a fist-bump. "Yes!"

"You were warned!"

She was correct here.

"If Thorgabella wanted some, how would Aaploe tell her no?" Kitty said.

"If you even touch a hair on my horse's head, I am going to curse you so hard!" Karla said. That may or may not have been in character. "And pay Kenzi to backstab you, too! We'll feed you to Thorgabella!"

Topher sulked.

"Just because Peter makes it a rule doesn't mean..."

Yes, Topher. Yes. It did. You knew that.

"Fine."

And lo, fistbump.

"I've never had a fistbump over a game involving a horse before."

No one had, Kitty. ...Hopefully.
