Okay. The world was maybe almost over. Topher was more than a little freaked.

So out came the dice and the cape, and after making a quick annoucement, he set up at a toadstool with some character sheets for some pre-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons.

Kid had priorities.

Kitty so had no idea what she was doing.

"Okay, can Aaploe Egraa," she said, pronouncing it differently than she had the first time, "maybe ask what the reward is? Am I doing this right? Should I be barfighting?"

"...Redo! I want someone more my speed! Like with the stabbing and witty banter. I'm not good at this white hat crap, people. Tried it once, pretty sure I died." A beat. "Like legit died. None of that fake out crap you kids are so into these days."

"Just sit," Topher assured him. "You'll be fine."

"If drinking's illegal, there shouldn't be a tavern in the first place," Rinoa said. "So it has to be legal which means he should be able to drink."

Apparently you didn't need to know the rules in order to rules-lawyer.

"Does lawful good mean you can't stab people?"

She was glad she hadn't picked that one.

Squall sat, and shrugged. "If you say so."

"Are we supposed to say yes?" Rinoa asked. "I don't get it. Why wouldn't the wizard-guy go himself?"

This was going to be fun!

"Your character's name is Thorgabella!??!"

Rinoa was focusing on the really important things, here.

"It's clearly an evil tavern. Like a speak-easy. Which is why we have to start a barfight to stop them all."

His logic was the best logic.

"We could just decide it DID work, if we want to do that," Squall countered. "If we're going to do stuff without him, why bother with flipping a coin?"

"How do we know this wizard-guy is even telling the truth?" Rinoa asked. "Maybe he's a nice gnome king and this is all a big trap to make us hurt him unfairly. We should just refuse to go on principle unless someone's got evidence."

"I have a two-bladed sword," Natalie offered, consulting her sheet. "I guess that's good."

"Well, I didn't name her," Jono protested, frowning at his sheet. "But it certainly seems to suit."

Really. Trust him on this.

"I suppose your name is much better, then."

"I'm a sorceress," Rinoa declared, in the least surprising news ever. "I could blow up the tavern."

Nobody had explained what "level 1" meant to Rinoa.

"... Point." Jono tilted his head, and then made an executive decision. "Thorgabella threatens the barkeep for biscuits, and gets... some. Do we have to write this down?"

"Is that a cult?" Rinoa asked. "Do I get wine, if I join your cult?"

She'd left the religious line on her sheet blank. That could change!

"Osteat is going to need some wine before deciding whether or not to go on this quest." The wine would help him decide whether or not he wanted to heal these people.

"Because we don't want to spend the entire game in the tavern," Natalie contributed, a little dryly.

"It started as Berda Ker," she said, "but I changed it to Bedrystaia Kyrlia the Just because that's even better. I'm a half-elf with long blonde hair and a powerful sorceress. I'm also a kidnapped princess but now I have amnesia."

Someone ought to tell Rinoa that you only needed one Y to spell 'Mary Sue.'

"If you're so powerful, how did you get kidnapped, exactly? And what are you doing in a tavern?"

Sorry, Rinoa. Jono was bad at this game.

"YOU don't," Squall countered, sighing and gesturing at everyone else.

Squall shrugged. "You probably should, or else we'll forget. I don't really care."

"Does your character sheet say that you can?" Squall asked her. "I think we have to stick with what it says."

"How come the wizard-guy is just gonna stay in the bar and drink?" Rinoa asked. "If he's really a wizard-guy, and if he cares so much, maybe he could come along and help us. He has some spells, right?"

"Honestly, neither do I," Jono admitted. "Let's assume we got a... magic bag with an infinite amount of biscuits. That way, we don't need to keep track."

Yes. That would work nicely.

"Can I kill them?" Rinoa asked. "Wait, is this a trick question? Will I get arrested if I kill them? You said that weird guy in the pajamas couldn't drink. Murder's probably way more illegal than drinnking."
