Okay. The world was maybe almost over. Topher was more than a little freaked.

So out came the dice and the cape, and after making a quick annoucement, he set up at a toadstool with some character sheets for some pre-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons.

Kid had priorities.

"They aren't," Karla agreed. "Sacrificing someone is just wrong. Believe me, I know. I was sacrificed on a meat-tree once."

You could see how long it had really been since he'd played D&D.

"Not her," Topher said maturely, pointing at Karla. "Everyone else, totally."

A beat. Then he pointed at Rinoa.

"Except her."

"You just can't handle my awesomeness," Rinoa announced. "I'm totally the one winning this game so far."

"You should be nice to me," Rinoa said brightly. "Or else I'll drop giant meteors onto your head."

Some days, being a Sorceress was awesome.

And Topher was just going to squawk and scramble back. "But -- but -- no!"

"No meteors, please!" Billy said, putting a hand in front of Topher like that would help. "You'll have to excuse him, he's still learning more advanced social skills."

"He should learn some of the basics first," Rinoa said primly. "Like being nice to me so I don't set him on fire with magic. That's a good one."

"I'll just have to heal him if you do, so it's not even worth the energy," Billy said. "And I promise I won't let you be sacrificed in return."

Topher turned around, looking a bit amused. "I am?"

NEWS TO HIM.

"Yes, you are," Billy said firmly, hoping Topher would just go with him on this one before one of the girls strangled him. "If you want to do things like this without having things bigger than dice thrown at you."

"By a creepy maenad!" Karla said, thumping him in the ear with Craft. "She made people have orgies. I wish you'd been there to be scarred for life."

"I'm pretty sure yours is!" Karla snapped. "At least, that's the only reason I could come up with for it looking like that! Dipped in a vat of acid, maybe?"

"Maybe!" he yelled. "But -- but -- I still got to sleep with your boyfriend!"

Ex-boyfriend. In the same bed. Partially clothed. Topher, just let it go already.

"At least I have a--"

Oh. Wait. No. No she didn't.

Karla retaliated by maturely. With an open-handed slap to the face.

A better genius than Topher probably could have predicted that. And yet.

"What the f--" Ow, that snap to the side actually really hurt his neck. "What is the matter with you!?" he wailed.

"Warren got vanished yesterday," she said in a low voice, trembling with suppressed emotions that she was pretending were are all variations on angry. "Don't you mention him, you hear me."

"How could he get vanished yesterday? We slept in the--"

Two days ago.

"Ohhhhh."

Well, shit.

"Now then. Unless you want to get hit again, you should stop talking and go back to refereeing your game."
