Room 307, Tuesday Evening

So for Topher, today had been noteworthy due to a variety of circumstances, the most obvious of which being:

1.) His best friend was apparently a world-famous political blogger who'd saved a whole bunch of kids' lives
2.) Said best friend had just been forced to go into hiding to avoid being killed by a Belgian psychopath
3.) Topher's room was still full of paint fumes, and
4.) It was his sixteenth birthday.

As a result of all of that, plus the portal-lag that came from the round-trip excursion to Peter's universe, Topher was just a little bit exhausted by the time he got back to his room in the evening. Too exhausted, in fact, to indulge in his usual birthday tradition of a cupcake and a couple rounds of laser tag at the nearest arena. So instead, by the time he got to his room, he flopped down on his bed to try to repress concerns about Peter by playing Tetris on his phone.

At least he was kicking ass at it, so, you know, there was that.

Dave ducked. "If the phone's not broken, I guess."

He picked the phone up and brought it back over to Topher to confirm that it was still working.

Topher poked the touchscreen. It... responded to being touchscreened.

"Pfft," he said, passing it back. "It's fine."

"Okay, good. Sorry if I'm paranoid about that, but we still don't even have cell phones back home," Dave said, looking at the game and realizing that he had no clue what was happening. "Actually, my grandparents still have a rotary phone."

Topher looked at all the blocks that had been piling up while Dave had been going on about the phone and sighed in something vaguely like disgust.

Then the rotary phone comment distracted him, because, well, it was a rotary phone. "A... you're kidding, right?"

No, Topher, because Dave was a dinosaur.

"Give me a break, I'm from thirty years ago," Dave pointed out as he started tapping the screen to try to figure the game out."

"Dinosaur," Topher commented. Was it affectionate? Maaaybe. "Okay, so you want the blocks to... not pile up. Which is what they're doing now. So you move the ones that are falling so that they'll complete a line on the bottom, 'cause once you have a whole line, it blips out."

He demonstrated.

"Like that."

"They have some weird games in the future," Dave noted. "There aren't even any humanoids to save in this."

Oh, Dave, you giant weirdo. "You can pretend you're trying to break down a wall to save some humanoids, if you want?"
