Okay. The world was maybe almost over. Topher was more than a little freaked.

So out came the dice and the cape, and after making a quick annoucement, he set up at a toadstool with some character sheets for some pre-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons.

Kid had priorities.

Okay, Billy was probably right.

"I'm sorry!" Topher squeaked. "There is no need for murder!"

Just in case Jono was thinking about it. Which he probably was.

"See?!!" Kenzi said real fast. "Sorry! So Sorry! Sorry sorry sorry sorry!"

Then she reached over to poke Topher. "Learn from this!"

"I think our Dragon Master's a people person," said Kitty dryly.

Not that it's called, Kitty.

"Dungeon Master!" Topher exclaimed, appalled at her bad terminology.

"Or from this," Karla said, tapping Topher on the shoulder. And then punching right in his face.

Hey. You didn't waste punching permissions from Squall, okay?

"Aoisahgposahgpasihgpoiahspgh!"

Or, you know. Something like that.

"Why can't you learn to duck?" Kenzi asked in resignation, holding out a bottle of Mountain Dew.

Topher pressed the bottle to his eye. "This was the first one in a while," he moaned. "What's the matter with people?"

NOT PEOPLE, TOPHER. JUST YOU.

"Where do I start?" Kenzi said rhetorically. "Look, just never ever comment on someone's looks. It's a thing." That Topher would never master.

"But he's blue!"

TOPHER. STOP.

"But so what!" Having trod very close to this line last week, Kenzi didn't want to see Topher try that particular dance with annoyance or, you know, deadly irritation. "You're pink! SHOCKING NEWS! Let it go!"

"I just want to learn things!" Topher insisted. He grew louder and more animated as he continued, "Like, why's he blue? Why's Warren have wings and Karla have that poison thing and why would someone cool want to go out with her and what the hell is up with everything outside and why does that toadstool have more spots than the others and SERIOUSLY, DON'T YOU THANK A GUY WHEN HE DUNGEON MASTERS YOU?"

Aaaaaaaaaand breathe.

Okay, okay okay okay, Kenzi could only address part of that, so: "THANK YOU FOR DUNGEON MASTERING! ... and seriously, you wonder about the toadstools? What? And sometimes people are touchy! That's why! And and ..." Kenzi put her head in her hands. "Anyone?"

Kitty raised her hand a little. "And there are really better times for certain discussions?" she said. "Like not while we're slaying dragons, for instance."

"I agree!" Topher chimed in. "There's no need for punching in the middle of an epic freaking quest!"

That wasn't what she meant, Topher.

"Or asking personal questions," Kenzi stressed. Half of her wanted to hug Topher for being clueless. The other half wanted to join the mob. "So, yeah, apologize, and let's get back to the gaaame, and from now on you don't get to name stuff. Or nickname people. Nope. I'm gonna ask Peter to make it a rule."

"Are you aware that you really earned that?" Billy asked, honestly not sure of the answer at this point.

Topher just whimpered.

"Can you magic it?" he pleaded, offering Billy some puppy eyes.

"No," Karla said sternly. "That right there is a consequence. One he should live with so he can hopefully appreciate what could have happened."

"Billyyyyyyyyyy," Topher whimpered, still with the puppy eyes.

Oh, he was weak against puppy eyes, but he also had enough sense to outweigh them. "My spells don't work if I don't really want them to work, and I think maybe you need a reminder of how to keep certain kinds of comments in your head."

"Look at it this way," Karla said, giving Billy an encouraging smile. "You're making it so I don't have to hit him again later as a reminder. Good on you."

"But..."

THIS WAS VERY SAD, BILLY.

"Was it really that bad?"

"Yes!" Karla said, tamping down her impatience. Maybe if she explained it right, Topher would actually get it.

"Topher, Jono didn't always look like that. Something HORRIBLE happened to him--something he's still dealing with. It's changed everything about him, his body, his appearance, how he sees himself...everything. And what did you do? You picked on him. Made him so angry and yet feel so small at the same time. And you did it because you didn't care. You were a bully right there. A cruel, heartless bully who used ignorance to hurt someone for no damn reason."

She looked at him and then shook her head. "I hope you feel ashamed of yourself. You should. I'm ashamed of you. Warren and Tony would be, too."

Billy was genuinely glad that Karla mentioned Tony, because at least that might get the information through Topher's head. "You've got to learn to stop the first time people tell you you've said something offensive, because yes, it was bad. And for the record, in general, when someone's eyes go red, it's time to apologize." Even if he didn't mean it, geez.
