Okay. The world was maybe almost over. Topher was more than a little freaked.

So out came the dice and the cape, and after making a quick annoucement, he set up at a toadstool with some character sheets for some pre-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons.

Kid had priorities.

"Uh, not in the least," Karla said. "I didn't even blacken your eye when I hit you. But I did save you from being vanished so you could run around Special Collections in a cape."

"D&D," he answered helpfully. Then, anticipating a less-than-knowledgable response, he clarified, "It's a game. You role-play as a character and go on a quest."

"No, like a role-playing thing," he repeated. "You don't, like, get up and act it out. Unless you do. Okay. It's sort of an acting thing."

A beat.

"But you'd suck at it, so you shouldn't play."

Topher was seriously underestimating the effects of reverse psychology.

Karla had just been about to inform him that his game sounded as dumb as his cape looked, but at that...

"I would not!" Karla was affronted. "I bet I would be amazing!"

Karla marched over to the area he'd set up, snagged herself a character sheet, and waited. "Just you wait," she told him. "I am not only going to play awesomely, I am going to win. So there."

Then he let it go. Because, well. She'd find out the hard way.
